Camps at The Leaf
Campers explore nature, learn about plants and animals, play games, and make new friends. We offer in-service camps, spring and winter camps, and weekly summer camps in July and August.
Celebrate the rich landscapes, colours, and plants of Brazil at The Leaf! Drawing inspiration from Brazilian landscape architect and environmentalist, Roberto Burle Marx, horticulturist and plant designer Rob Halpern has skillfully combined form, colour, and plant diversity for our newest display, Brasil Moderno.
“Garden design was reinvented when Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx brought modernism and native plants together in unexpected ways,” said Halpern. “Brasil Moderno brings his vision to The Leaf with a tropical garden of bold sweeps of colour, stand-out architectural plants, and unexpected uses of native Brazilian plants.”
Burle Marx introduced many native Brazilian plants to the gardening public, including the Philodendron ‘Burle Marx’ which was named for him. His unique approach to design, characterized by bold shapes, vibrant colours, and the use of native plants, had a significant impact on the aesthetics of public spaces in Brazil. By showcasing the beauty and diversity of the country's plants, Burle Marx contributed to the conservation and appreciation of Brazil's rich botanical heritage.
In this display, bromeliads, which are plants that are usually found perched high in tropical Brazilian trees, are massed as bright groundcovers around featured species including Dwarf date palms, ‘Singapore Twist’ Ti plants, oil palms, and dragon trees.
Visitors are invited to look for the Brazilian flag throughout the Hartley and Heather Richardson Tropical Biome to identify plants for Brazil, including Passionfruit Passiflora coccinea, Passiflora quadranularis, and Cocoa Theobroma cacao.
