Defenses of the Animal Kingdom

The Assiniboine Park Zoo is thrilled to announce the debut of a new attraction coming to the Zoo for a limited time only this summer.

Defenses of the Animal Kingdom will feature a variety of fascinating creatures and interactive multimedia displays exploring some of the animal kingdom’s strangest methods of self-defense, which can include size, claws, teeth, venom, poison, and more!

Featured Species:

  • Linnaeus’s Two-Toed Sloth (Choloepus didactylus)
  • Taiwan Beauty Snake (Orthriophis taeniurus)
  • Musk Turtle (Sternotherus odoratus)
  • Salmon Pink Birdeater Tarantula (Lasiodora parahybana)
  • Chameleon Anoles (Anolis barbaratus)
  • Four Toed Hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris)
  • Box Turtle (Terrepene Carolina)
  • Three-Banded Armadillo (Tolypeutes matacus)
  • Ornate Uromastyx (Uromastyx ornate)
  • Oman Lizard (Omanosaura jayakari)

Visitors may also enjoy impromptu encounters with other species of reptiles and arachnids.

Zoo Chats

Learn more about the charismatic creatures featured in this interactive exhibit during scheduled Zoo chats held daily at
10:00 am, 11:30 am, 1:00 pm, and 2:30 pm.

Animal interactions will take place at the discretion of wildlife caretakers. Animal welfare is always the highest priority.

Defenses of the Animal Kingdom is located in the Doug Harvey, Jan Shute and Family Centre on the west side of the Zoo and included with regular admission.
